What is Tornado Cash :

It is an application that runs on Ethereum blockchain.

What does it do:

It allows to send anonymous transactions on Ethereum.

What the government did.

  1. Deleted the GitHub code repo of Tornado cash.
  2. Deleted the GitHub personal accounts who have contributed to Tornado cash repo.
  3. Stopped the RPC nodes( Infura, Alchemy) from interacting with Tornado cash smart contracts.
  4. Deleted the TC website.
  5. Any one in America who interacts with TC application is now marked as criminal and charged with criminal charges.

What the government cannot do?

  1. It can’t stop the TC application on the blockchain.

It is not any specific bad actor who is being sanctioned, but instead it is all Americans who may wish to use this automated tool in order to protect their own privacy while transacting online who are having their liberty curtailed without the benefit of any due process.

How can government ban a tool which is neutral in it nature. This is similar to government banning a knife manufacture, because there knife was used in a crime.

What can we do

It is really important to stop using the tools provide by the centralized organizations as they can be controlled by government.

  1. Stop using GitHub and start using decentralized alternative such as Radicle for your next project.
  2. Host your project frontend on IPFS.
  3. Stop using centralized RPC nodes, run your now node.
